If you’ve been keeping in touch with us on Instagram or Facebook, you’ve probably noticed that lots of volunteers are devoting their time, energy, and effort into building living shorelines throughout the Lowcountry. Thanks to our volunteers, business, and community partners, we’ve been able to plant three reefs along the Ashley River, two in the Kiawah Marsh, and one just off Wadmalaw Island. These reefs are an important part of the Lowcountry ecosystem, as living shorelines naturally provide unique benefits to the local environment. Those benefits include improved water quality, erosion control, and habitat creation for both commercial and non-commercial species.
88 volunteers got their boots dirty and planted a few thousand bags of oyster shells in our local waterways. These opportunities allowed residents of the Lowcountry to give back to the land and water they love and further immerse themselves in some of the Land Trust’s work. We couldn’t have done this without our volunteers and the help of our community partners – BoomTown!, Passarella & Associates, Charleston Waterkeeper, Summerville Saltwater Anglers, DNR SCORE, and US Fish and Wildlife Services. Here’s to another successful season of oyster builds!
