Living Shoreline Demonstration Project: Conservation Connections

A beautiful summer day on Wadmalaw Island brought nearly 50 volunteers to a Land Trust protected property along the banks of Church Creek to participate in the installation of a living shoreline demonstration project. Volunteers created a human chain placing 700 bags of oyster shell along the marsh edge to encourage accretion and marsh restoration.

The project is a partnership between the Land Trust and the South Carolina Chapter of The Nature Conservancy.

Living shorelines provide a natural alternative to hardened shorelines aiding in re-establishing habitat migration corridors, reducing the impact of severe storm damage as well as acute impacts due to boat wakes and wave action.

The Land Trust will continue to work with The Nature Conservancy over the next several years to monitor the progress of the living shoreline. Many thanks to The Nature Conservancy for providing this opportunity to our landowners and to all the Boeing, Alcoa and community volunteers who graciously offered their time!
