LLT Celebrates Earth Day at Keystone Tract

LLT Celebrates Earth Day at Keystone Tract

Happy Earth Day! We hope you had the opportunity to get out there and show our planet some love. In celebration, our team spent the day at a protected property in Berkeley County. The group toured portions of the land to a) get outside; b) check in on progress made with our land restoration efforts; c) introduce new team members to this extraordinary project; and d) to clean up debris along the roadways.

The 1,600-acre property, known as Keystone, is one of three tracts protected in 2014 as part of a wetlands mitigation permit to expand the Boeing Corporation facilities in North Charleston. LLT worked with its partners at the Open Space Institute, The Nature Conservancy, the US Forest Service, and the SC Department of Natural Resources to acquire these properties and position them for public access in the future. Keystone is a significant protected property due to its location adjacent to Francis Marion National Forest and the Cooper River National Historic District. It is an essential link between public lands and privately conserved lands surrounding the East Branch of the Cooper River and the greater Cooper River Corridor. Since being protected in 2014 by Lowcountry Land Trust and Boeing, the long-term objective for the property has been to restore native longleaf pine and forested wetland habitat, along with the myriad species associated with these two remarkable ecosystems.

During the property tour and cleanup, we celebrated the progress made over the past few years through new longleaf pine growth and hydrologic recovery, the resulting increase in biodiversity, and the enhancement of downstream water quality. The work at Keystone is just one of many examples that remind us what we can accomplish when we develop innovative solutions that benefit people and give back to our Earth.
