The enduring wish of one of Charleston’s great preservationists — the late Emily Ravenel Farrow — became a reality September 2011 when her beloved Ashem Farm was transferred from the Lowcountry Open Land Trust to the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission to become a public park. At this time, the objects designated by Mrs. Farrow for local museums were transferred to those organizations. Always working toward the benefit of others, she even had a plan for the myriad items in her residual estate that were not slated for an archive or museum collection. Mrs. Farrow bequeathed these items to the Lowcountry Open Land Trust and Historic Charleston Foundation, with the intention that the remaining belongings should be sold to support the conservation and preservation mission of both organizations.Mrs. Farrow lived on this 55-acre farm in West Ashley, and from 1947 to 1984, she and her family also resided in downtown Charleston at the historic William Gibbes House. Thanks to Mrs. Farrow’s insightful regard for conservation and preservation, both Ashem and the William Gibbes House are protected by conservation easements held by Historic Charleston Foundation. The items to be auctioned — including books, furniture, ceramics, metalwork, household wares and farm tools — were collected, used, and admired by Mrs. Farrow and her husband, Ashby.
